Please compare/contrast music industries of Christian Vs Pop/AC Music? For Singer-songwriters?

I just recently started listening to Christian music and I've been considering "switching over" from the secular writing I do to writing "Contemporary Christian" pop. What would be some good references for me to learn more about the CC Music industry? Does it work pretty much the same as the secular industry? Are there signed *and* indie artists? (if so, name good examples of indie CC artists, please)? I would probably be more interested in becoming an independent artist regardless of genre, although I have a pretty good idea of what it takes to become a secular, indie artist. What would be the differences should I switch over? Any books, websites, or tips from people who have real answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. there are a lot of similiar routes for christian artists as secular artists. www.taxi.com is a good a&r site that looks for all types of music. http://www.gospelmusic.org/ is an excellent site to look at for industry facts in christain music. yes, there are signed christian artists and indie (i being one of those). the one difference being christian and secular is that it is a little easier for secular artist to get heard (i.e. play in bars, various local settings). Depending on where you live, it's hard to be "allowed" to play songs with a Christian message. I suggest start with your church. That's a good way to connect your music with people you have the same beliefs as you do. It's also good to find someone who can give you honest feedback about your work. Contacting your local Christian radio station is also a good idea. I hope this helps some. blessings.
  2. The christian music industry and the secular music industry are very similar. I would imagine though that it would be easier to find an audience in the secular music industry. One of the major differences however is what the music is for. Christian music is about praise God where as the secular industry could be about absolutely anything. Another difference is the heart behind the artists. Their chief end is to praise God through music and bring people a better understanding of who God is. I do not agree with using the church as a means to launch yourself into the christian music industry. I'm not sure where your heart lies, but I would suggest searching to make sure you are switching for the right reason. So in the end the main difference is the christian music industry is really about praising God.
