Pop Music in Europe?

Do the people in non English speaking countries in Europe listen to English pop songs from US or Britain? Or do they listen to pop music sung by their own singers in their own native languages? Do they understand the songs sung in English?

  1. they listen to UK music cos its infinitely better than their hurdy gurky / tacky techno dross
  2. When i lived in Spain the charts and popular music was predominanly Spanish or from Spanish speaking countries, although rave/dance music was listened to from all countries......
  3. I am German, and we listen to british music all the time.We do understand the words as well.
  4. It's is a mix. Normally there is a big influence from USA in both pop and rock. But you will also hear songs that originally are written in the local language and songs that originally were written in English and then translated in to the local language. Some years the most popular language to sing in has been English while other years it has been the local language. In the most European countries people are at least bi-lingual - and one of the most common second languages is English. Some countries radio stations have a specific quote of songs in the local language they have to play every day. This is to protect/preserve the local language.
  5. i saw top 20 charts for a variety of non-english speaking countries, and the songs were a combination of UK/US music hits, and native language songs
  6. Bit of both. They listen to the UK/US stuff, but they have their own stars. A lot of European stuff is pretty good and it's just prejudice by monoglot morons like certain people who've answered this question that stop them being hits here.
  7. euro-pop is utterly dire! the only thing worse is j-pop!
  8. I have been to both Holland and Austria and spent lots of time in my hotel room watching the local MTV channel. Many mainstream US songs reach Europe a little after they peak in the US. British music is also very popular and about 1/4 of the top songs are in the local language.
  9. I suppose most British people have a rather patronising attitude to pop and rock music from other European countries. Asked to name a European band, I suspect most people would name Abba, at once glorious and silly. Glorious and silly: A British view of Europop This dismissal is probably based on occasional exposure to the truly dreadful rubbish that comes out of French or Belgian radios. French just is not the language of rock and roll. And then there's the stuff in bars and cafes. I don't think other European countries are any worse than Britain for playing inappropriate background music, but I find it not simply irritating but also baffling. It's fair enough when a young bar staff blare out stuff they like at the customers but so often it seems clear that neither the workers nor the customers are enjoying inappropriate background music. Particularly weird, although this is not a recent encounter, is the music played over loudspeakers into charming French villages.

  11. Of course!!!!! They can understand music in English because this language is obbligatory to learn in Europe. And of course, they have their own artists in their own languages, for example Finland, home of HIM, The Rasmus and Apocalyptica. This groups sing in English, but they also have several songs in finnish.
  12. Yes, yes and not always, but they learn to sing them phonetically!
