Is it legal to broadcast pop music on an Internet stream?

In the UK that is. Also do I need to pay for any licenses. It is a small station for friends.

1. Sincerely, if it's just for few friends then I think you wouldn't have problems, but if you want to make real internet radio station with lots of listeners, I think you need to pay.
2. Absolutley not, remember all music is copyrighted/owned by the artist and to broadcast it would leave you open to prosecution if caught. Not worth the risk.
